The flowers of Colchicum autumale (Meadow saffron) and of Bieberstein's crocus are very similar. However, there is one clear difference: the flowers of Meadow saffron have six stamens, while those of Bieberstein's crocus have three. Colchicum autumale is native to most parts of Europe. With sunny autumn weather the flowers open beautifully wide. Unfortunately a wet autumn can cause the flowers of Meadow saffron to go over quickly.

Please note that Colchicums have foliage in the spring: plant them therefore in a spot that doesn't get mown at this time of the year. After receiving the Colchicum bulbs, plant them as quickly as possible. The bulbs can be stored in the fridge for a short while (frost free!)
